Join us for the inaugural William David Barry Memorial Lecture, established through the generous 2024 gift from the H. H. & J. Holverson Trust in his memory. We are excited to welcome Dr. Jamie L. Brummitt, historian of American religion and material culture and author of the forthcoming Protestant Relics in Early America (Oxford University Press, 2025), who will explore how relics, remembrance, and reverence shaped early American identity through stories and artifacts from Maine and beyond. The morning will include celebratory remarks and refreshments following the program.

    Event Details

The William David Barry Memorial Lecture Series Fund honors the influential career of historian and author William "Bill" Barry (1946–2023). Known for his pioneering research at the Portland Museum of Art and the Maine Historical Society (MHS), Barry expanded the understanding of Maine’s role in American history through work that reached from Maine to Hawaii to Washington, D.C.

The fund supports annual or biennial lectures and scholarly events at MHS, featuring visiting or MHS-affiliated speakers. The series highlights innovative Maine-related historical research, especially on lesser-known topics or emerging research methods. It upholds Barry’s commitment to "speak the truth as shown by research."
