Founder & ceo : amplifier of hope - using media, marketing and publishing to make recovery from addiction more visible

"why?" why ... a media company? why ... a PRINT magazine in 2019? why ... out in "public"? why ... direct mail? why ... now? Greenlight Maine created our founder story last fall and since then I've had many people reach out and ask me various types of "Why" questions. After 27+ years quietly living my best bonus life leading IT departments, why such a shift in my professional career to doing what I'm doing today (not so quietly)? This morning during my morning zen time I reflected on these types of questions over the past few months and I realized that ULTIMATELY it's about inclusivity, which has been one of Journey's core values since day 1. At the time, it meant the many paths to recovery and ALL humans and today I see it connects to accessibility. We want EVERYONE to have access to the FACTS: 1) addiction is treatable 2) recovery is possible 3) help & support is available Accessibility to this information shouldn't be reserved for those of us who found our way to treatment (thank god) or for those of us who ended up behind bars or for those who struggle getting our basic needs met. Everyone should know about the advancements in science, the many paths to finding a FREE community-based mutual aid recovery program and the support that's available. If more people know the facts, more people can share and amplify what they learn - the ripple effect of people adding voices to this message of hope can not be denied. Our children are listening and watching. visible AND accessible recovery information saves lives we promote the facts with writers, collaborators, partners and ambassadors and then we get amplify it grateful.

"we don't have that problem here" it was a response from an employer recently to a Journey team member they said "Oh ok, here's a magazine, just in case" thanks to the National Safety Council calculator we're able to look at the prevalence by State by Industry (link in the comments) this type of response is actually the exception and not the rule when talking to employers most are eager to understand where resources are and how to help their employees, their family members and the communities they do business in thankfully.

We bring resources out to communities - literally meeting people where they’re at Sometimes we make mistakes in our messaging 🤦♀️

oh Carolyn ... i'm in a constant state of learning, practicing, relearning, etc. last Saturday I attended the Rotary District 7780 event as a "Friend to the Rotary" with our resource table - Deterra, Narcan, Magazines and resources Niki Curtis, who usually would be there, is in Poland (not Poland Maine) with her Rotary Club for a research mission So Brenda Briggs was stuck with me - we always have 2 people attend events because we've learned we don't need to do anything alone I listened to Brenda share our message about the importance of "safe drug disposal" and why we give out Deterra Bags and she said it so well, I listened carefully So, when she was away from the table, I tried to explain it like she did but .... She says "Protect the water, save the fish" - after explaining the importance of not flushing prescription medication Mine came out "Save the fish, save the water" 🤦♀️ I didn't hear until I saw the video. We're looking for someone to sponsor our Deterra bags - we gave out thousands last year (at over 150 events) as we educated about the importance of safe drug disposal (much better than I did) If you want to help us get this message out to masses, connect with me.

Over the past 5 years, as more and more magazines got out into the world, we continue to have these experiences - I think they're called "serendipitous" A series of things that happen, you can't plan for, but they end up being amazing and adding to our lives along with increasing the impact we're able to bring to work we're doing Like meeting Joanna Free, M.Ed. and her story of joining our Journey team - Joanna's on a mission to help people with tobacco and wrote a book We LOVE telling personal recovery stories about freedom from addiction so I interviewed her ... and our one hour planned interview in 2021 turned into 2 1/2 hours I think - and we were kindred spirits from that very first zoom intro Joanna's now been part of our Journey team for 2 years - helping with editorial and distribution. She has conversations along her routes and builds relationships with people she meets along the way - "getting the hope out". Her enthusiasm is contagious and you can physically feel gratitude "energy" from her. Joanna helps us elevate recovery and amplify hope!

Recovery capital refers to the internal and external resources that individuals can draw upon to support their journey towards recovery from addiction. These resources can include personal motivation, social support networks, professional guidance, and access to treatment services. Building and strengthening recovery capital is essential for maintaining long-term sobriety and resilience in the face of challenges; luckily recovery coaches are available to help assess. We're thrilled to welcome a new contributing columnist - sharing important and valuable information with our audience! Allison Stowell, a dietician working with Hannaford Supermarkets, involved with the Guiding Stars program, will be providing important and valuable articles with nutrition education. Nutrition plays a crucial and multifaceted role in the recovery from addiction. It's considered a foundational element in the comprehensive treatment and long-term management of addiction. With a husband who has celiac disease, I've learned just how important nutrition is to overall well-being and am excited that we can include this content for our audience. I love how she ties nutrition to joy AND health! Welcome Allison!

information worth sharing 4 years later - guessing this number is much higher The National Survey on Drug Use & Health (2020) reports that more than 40.3 MILLION people in the US are affected by addiciton. Many of them go to work every day. Wondering how many of them might work for you? Check out the National Safety Council calculator if you're curious.
