Sebago Clean Waters (SCW) is a coalition of nine conservation organizations, the Portland Water District, and business partners working collaboratively to protect the Sebago Lake watershed in Maine. Sebago Lake is the drinking water supply for Greater Portland, Maine and serves over 200,000 people, or one-sixth of all Maine residents. Sebago Lake is so pure it does not require filtration before treatment, one of the few surface drinking water supplies in the US that meet this standard. Currently, 84% of the 234,000-acre watershed is forested and serves as a ‘green water treatment plant’ for the lake. These extensive forests also provide climate mitigation, recreational opportunities, fish and wildlife habitat and economic benefits. However, only about 14% of these forests are currently conserved and the U.S. Forest Service has identified this critical watershed as at high risk of development. SCW formed in 2017 around a shared vision of permanently conserving at least 25% of the forestland in the watershed to protect the drinking water source, while securing many public co-benefits, including climate mitigation, clean air, public health and recreation, and biodiversity.
